For some of the best Japanese food in Manchester, head to this hidden foodie treasure tucked away at the heart of First Street. Pull up a seat on one of the rattan chairs and tuck into crispy cauliflower pakoras, fluffy bao buns and comforting Japanese donburi bowls.
Ramen fans should make a beeline for the tori wantanmen – a clear chicken broth packed with shoyu tare, chicken wontons, chashu, ginger and spring onion oil.

The journey to Rome isn’t half as far at Lupo Cafe Italiano in Prestwich. Hidden away on an industrial estate, this authentic Italian eatery serves everything from arancini and scamorza croquettes to calabrese rigatoni and salami calzone.

This 19th-century library is one of Manchester’s most charming hidden spaces. Tucked away on the top floor of a historic bank building, the only way inside is by ringing the bell.
Once through the doors, you’ll find 25,000 books spanning more than 450 years, along with free public exhibitions and a beautiful members’ reading room. Finish your visit with tea and cake in the café, surrounded by towering bookcases.

Pollen Bakery, Kampus

Hidden away at leafy Kampus, Pollen Bakery is one of Manchester’s most beloved independent bakeries. Follow the scent of freshly baked pastries and you’ll find flaky croissants, sourdough loaves and some of the city’s best brunch plates.
Grab a seat outside overlooking the Kampus garden courtyard and enjoy a coffee and a sweet treat while the world carries on around you – it’s one of Manchester’s most peaceful corners.
