Head over to Costa del Salford for a day of waterside rambles, alfresco dining and scenic views.

It’s hard to imagine Salford Quays without Media City, the neon-tipped neighbourhood that’s put the north west on the map. It’s been 12 years since the development opened, and since then, more and more people have flocked to the area to live, work and play. We’ve rounded up our best bits, from globe-trotting street food to trailblazing microbreweries.

Kargo MKT

The interior of a busy street food market, full of diners

When Kargo MKT flung open its doors in summer 2023, residents on The Quays rejoiced. Salford’s newest and biggest food hall is a fantastic place to grab a drink and a bite to eat, taking you on a gastronomic tour around the globe by way of 19 independent kitchens.

Dig into flavourful Palestinian cuisine at Baity, try out some of Manchester’s best Korean-fried chicken at Bab K or get stuck into a birria ramen from Fuego – all excellent options. With a well-stocked bar serving craft beer and cocktails, alongside a cracking brew from Locale, you’ll want to stay all day and all night.

Why we love it: There’s always something new to try.
Where is it? Kargo MKT, Unit 32, Quayside Media City, Salford, Greater Manchester, M50 3AG.

The Alchemist

The interior of The Alchemist, Media City

Arguably one of the most scenic Alchemists in their roster, the Media City iteration of the creative cocktail bar perches on the waterside, its sprawling terrace a real sun trap on summer evenings. It’s great for weekend drinks, serving until the early hours, and it’s bound to impress your date.

Order up one of their enticing cocktails and you’ll be met with a vision of fire, ice and smoke, along with a healthy portion of booze. We love the nostalgia-inducing Screwball, a grown-up version of a trip to the ice cream van. As for the food, expect classics done well, including a mean fillet steak.

Why we love it: It’s a tried-and-tested date spot.
Where is it? The Alchemist, The Bund, The Quays, MediaCity UK, Salford, Greater Manchester, M50 3AB.

Mancunians bloody love a rice and three – in fact, we invented it, don’t you know? Chapati Cafe serve theirs in an off-the-beaten-track location just around the back of Media City. Pairing homemade curries with pocket-friendly prices, they’ve grown quite the following since moving from their original home in Chorlton.

Curries change daily, so there’s always something new to dig into. You could be scranning lamb curry on Monday, chilli paneer on Tuesday and a spicy chicken madras on Wednesday. It all comes served with rice and chutneys, and you’ll still have change from a tenner, whichever option you go for. Sorted.

Why we love it: Swing by on a lunchtime and you can make it a meal deal, adding a samosa and a soft drink for an extra £1.50.
Where is it? Chapati Cafe, Media City, Unit 4 The Garage, Salford, Greater Manchester, M50 2TG.

Marble Taproom

A pizza and a pint of beer at Marble Taproom

You’ll find the Marble Taproom tucked away on an industrial estate, just a few minute’s stroll from Media City. The home of Marble Beers, the taproom’s an intimate affair, giving you the chance to sup a freshly brewed pint in the shadow of the barrels it’s been stored in.

Behind the bar there’s an octet of regularly rotating beers to choose from, including one solid staple – their American Pilsner, the only lager on the Marble Beers roster. After a few scoops, you won’t be able to resist ordering one of their handmade pizzas, cooked in a huge stone oven – delicious!

Why we love it: There’s nothing better than enjoying a fresh pint and a board game.
Where is it? Marble Beers, Unit 7 Boston Court, Kansas Avenue, Salford, Greater Manchester, M50 2GN.

IWM North

Perched on the waterfront, IWM North is a masterpiece. Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the aluminium-clad building sits on the location of a real-life bomb site, adding to its gravitas. With a disorientating entrance and jutting angles, it’s intended to make visitors unsettled, a feeling that continues as you wander the museum’s vast halls.

Inside you’ll find a huge collection of war artefacts, taking you from the WWI to present-day. From a harrier jump jet to steel framework from the World Trade Centre, it’s an incredibly powerful journey through 20th and 21st century conflict. You’ll find a host of modern art too, like the dramatic Poppies which cascade down and pool within the Air Shard.

Why we love it: It’s both educational and moving in equal parts.
Where is it? IWM North Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park, Stretford, Manchester, M17 1TZ.

The latest venture from Seven Bro7hers saw them open up a brand-new venue on Central Bay, straight across from Kargo MKT. Named after the 11 people at the heart of the business – the seven brothers and four sisters – it’s a lovely laidback bar, serving food and drink alongside live music, darts and shuffleboard.

As you’d expect, there’s an extensive drinks selection, spanning beers to craft spirits, and a food menu that offers something for all tastes – the honey buffalo wings are a must. Drop by in the morning and you can tuck into a fry-up guaranteed to set you up for the day, while later on you’ll find sandwiches, wraps and a fine selection of sharing bites – we love the pigs in blankets, which come with gravy for dipping. Gnome Island

An island filled with colourful gnomes in Manchester

© Copyright Manchester-List 2024

Why is there an island of gnomes sat in the middle of Manchester Ship Canal? Where did they come from? What do they want? Well, let us tell you. It all started in 2016 when Gnorman moved onto the island. Soon enough he met Gnorma – it was love at first sight! They were blessed with twins, and the family expanded from there.

Confused? Us too, but the charming island is a testament to wonderful Mancunian weirdness, and you can see it for yourself with a wander down the Trafford banks of the Quays. Visit at Christmas time and you might even spot their very own gnomish Santa Claus!

Why we love it: It’s weird and wonderful and makes us proud to be Mancunian.
Where is it? Clippers Quay, Salford, Greater Manchester, M17 1EX.
