When it comes to walking the dog, a stroll around the block doesn’t always cut it. Luckily, Greater Manchester is full of wonderful parks and green spaces where you and the pup can stretch your legs. Whether you’re looking for waterside wanders or rambles in the woods, there’s plenty to choose from on Manchester’s top dog walks.
Heaton Park

As one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, Heaton Park serves up vast green spaces, woodlands, a boating lake and much more. Dogs can enjoy off-lead adventures in many areas, while the paths are ideal for long strolls.
There are dog-friendly cafes when you’re in need of a post-walk treat, and the sprawling views of Manchester are a sight to behold. It’s a real all-rounder for local dog owners seeking both nature and amenities.

Burrs Country Park

The park’s wide paths make it ideal for pooches who love a sniff, but they do need to be kept on a lead. You’ll also find plenty of benches, a cafe and even a dog-friendly pub that welcomes four-legged friends with open arms.

Media City & The Quays

When you’re looking for an urban dog walk in Manchester, Media City ticks all the boxes. Pedestrian-friendly paths loop around canals and across bridges, passing restaurants, sculptures and open plazas.
While it’s not as leafy as your local park, it’s clean, spacious and full of sensory stimulation for curious pups. It’s also a winner for evening walks – expect dramatic sunsets and those iconic neon lights.

Dove Stone Reservoir
Perched on the edge of the Peak District, Dove Stone Reservoir is a stunning escape into nature. There are many routes to choose from, but the 2.5km circular is a great choice for all ages and abilities.
With woodlands, streams and open fields to explore, your pooch will be in their element – but be mindful of livestock. Feeling ambitious? Tackle the Dovestone Circular – a 9.5km route that takes you around all three reservoirs.

Fletcher Moss

The park connects to wider trails for longer walks, while the dog-friendly Alpine Tea Room is a great spot to relax with a cuppa afterwards. It’s one of our favourite corners of south Manchester and ideal for relaxed strolls.

Dunham Massey

A National Trust estate with grand history and over 300 acres of ancient parkland, Dunham Massey is the perfect Manchester dog walk. Deer roam the grounds, meaning leads are a must, but the woodland and garden trails are wide and well-maintained.
You’ll find water bowls, dog bins and plenty of space to walk across the site, while the North Park offers the chance for off-lead adventures. A trip to the Ice Cream Parlour is essential on a warm day.

Platt Fields

Platt Fields isn’t just a haven for students, it’s also one of the most popular places to walk dogs in south Manchester. Alongside large open fields, there’s a duck pond, woodland glades and wide pathways suitable for both on and off-lead walks.
Expect a lively, vibrant atmosphere – especially in summer – and don’t be surprised if a friendly local asks to pet your pooch! Swing by on weekends and you can make a pitstop at the Market Garden’s Mud Kitchen, where they serve excellent homemade food.

Philips Park
Nestled near the Etihad Stadium, Philips Park is a hidden gem that dates all the way back to 1846. As you wander the Grade II-listed park, keep an eye out for its original features, including a carriage drive, serpentine paths and an amphitheatre.
As for walking your dog, you’ll find formal gardens, woodland trails and riverside routes to stomp along. Fancy a longer hike? Connect up to Clayton Vale for rural rambles and nature-spotting.

Mayfield Park
Manchester’s first new public park in over a century, Mayfield Park combines modern landscaping with natural features, and a restored section of the River Medlock flows right through it.
Situated right next to Piccadilly Station, it’s wonderfully convenient, whether you’ve wandered over from the city centre or travelled from afar. Dogs must be kept on-lead but there’s plenty to see and sniff.
In a nutshell: A quick green escape in the city centre.

Quarry Bank
A relic of Manchester’s industrial past, Quarry Bank is a fascinating visit for historians, but the woodland that surrounds it is perfect for dog walkers in search of a peaceful, picturesque outing.
You can explore the grounds of the historic mill estate with your pooch on-lead, following riverside trails and adventuring through the forest. There’s a dog-friendly cafe and seating in the mill yard if you need a break.
